What is a CMS and how does WordPress work
Content managers, called “ CMS ” for its acronym in English, are platforms that facilitate the creation of web pages and their management.
A few years ago, website development and design was only for professionals who knew how to develop code.
The arrival of these content managers has made it possible to bring web development closer to everyone who wants to do it, without the need for any technical knowledge.
The usual process for creating a website using a CMS is to first choose the design by selecting a template or theme , and then add the content you want to have on your website.
If the web page is made with development code, these two steps are not so far apart and it is difficult to create content without having to modify the original code.
WordPress is one of these administrators that allows you to start yourself with that idea you have in mind, in a simple and intuitive way, although with some effort. Read on to find out how!
WordPress.com vs WordPress.org
A website , whatever it is, has two fundamental parts : the backend , which is all the functionality that exists “behind” the website (like the instructions you give a button to direct the person to another site) and the fronted , which is what the reader sees (the button itself and the structure of the page).
Both parties must be in a hosting , which is an online computer that offers its services for you to host your website there. If you want to know more, take a look at this post:What is a Web Hosting and what types of Web Hosting exist
A well made and powerful website requires its own web hosting. In this post I explain what exactly a hosting is, how it works, how to distinguish the bad services from the good ones and what specific options may suit you depending on your project.
One of the great advantages of WordPress is that it includes these two parts of the web page in the same platform.
To create it, there are two different ways: use wordpress.com or wordpress.org
WordPress.com encompasses both site creation and design, as well as hosting . It is the easiest method if you are starting out in the field and do not have a lot of technical knowledge.
There are several different hiring plans on WordPress.com , like the ones you see in the image below. We also find the possibility of the free plan, as we are going to do in this example.
But you have to be careful with the free plan, since it does not let you have your own domain , and if you want your blog to be professional, this can hinder your objective.
The cheapest WordPress.com plans , such as personal and professional, have very few functionalities , and the design theme is very limited.
One of the examples where we see this limitation is that even the ” Business ” plan does not allow us to download a plugin for our website.
Due to these limitations, if you want your website to grow professionally, I recommend that you read this post on how to create a blog on WordPress.org. Even if you have to hire a hosting, in the end it is cheaper than the Business plan from WordPress.com.How to create a blog step by step from scratch
Creating a blog is easy. Here you will learn it from scratch ✚ How to create good content, position your website, monetize your blog and much more …
Instead WordPress.org is open source software that you must download and install on a hosting that you have previously hired.
It has many more advantages in terms of website customization , but its installation requires a little more dedication and technical learning. If you want to know how to do it, I leave you this video in which all the steps are explained
Now is the time to ask yourself which option is best for you, but if you want to use your blog in a professional way, I recommend WordPress.org more.
In this article we are going to see how to create a super simple and fast blog on WordPress.com
How to create an account on WordPress.com
Let’s see now how to create step by step how to create your blog for free with WordPress.com. For this, I leave you two ways: the video that follows …
… And the rest of this post where each of the steps is broken down.
To create an account on WordPress.com, the first thing you need to do is create an account on WordPress.com. To do this, go to the main page and click on ” Start creating your website “.
Now you must fill in your personal data with which you will then log in. Write your email account that you want to be associated with the WordPress account, a username and a secure password.
In this step you must choose the domain that your website will have. The domain is the web address that your blog will have and it is a key point for the good positioning of your website, so it should be something you think about before selecting it.
Normally buying a domain costs money , which is charged monthly or annually, but in this case, WordPress makes us an offer of a free domain .
The domain you choose must be very specific (there can only be one address with that name on the entire internet) because if not WordPress, to make it unique, it adds figures to that domain you have chosen and it is very ugly.
The downside of this free method is that it will never be your own domain, but rather a WordPress subdomain , in the format of ” yourdomain.wordpress.com “.
He also leaves us suggestions of the ones he considers the best, or if the one you want is not available this can serve as inspiration.MULTIPLY THE NUMBER OF CLICKS ON YOUR CONTENT

- You will get endless ideas to create your own titles.
- With the words “magic” you will write irresistible texts.

When you have chosen it, click on ” Choose “.
Now you must choose the WordPress.com plan you want for your site . There are four different ones, each one with different characteristics and for a different target audience.
Very important : if you choose a domain that is not free, and within x time you have to start paying, you do not have the option to choose the free plan, and you will have to buy one of the four that WordPress offers.
How to use the WordPress.com control panel
When you finish creating your WordPress.com account, you automatically get to the control panel of your WordPress website.
This is the site from where you are going to control your blog and we are going to know each of its parts and functionalities.
First of all, on the top right you have the notification buttons , shaped like a bell. From here you can monitor the activity of your blog, such as the unread posts you have, the comments you receive or the ” likes ” you receive.
The next button takes you to the settings of your visible profile . When you create a post, at the end of everything this section will appear with the information that you want to put. You have the option to write your name, surname and a description of yourself. This is a good opportunity to publicize your personal brand .
The last button is to create a new blog post, but we’ll get to that a bit later.
Returning to the main panel, we find a menu on the left with different tabs.
In the ” My home page ” section, as its description says, you can publish, edit and grow your website. In short, it is from where you manage all the content that you create.
If you go to the right side of the screen you can see a list of the steps necessary to create the website, and it is marked where you are.
As you can see in the example below, the next step we must take is to customize the home page.
In the ” Statistics ” section, when you have already published some posts, you will be able to follow their visibility; how many people see each entry, how many “likes” it has or the comments people leave.
In the ” Plan ” section we find the different WordPress.com plans that we saw before when we created the account. As we have seen, the option to create a free account is the one we are following, but it is true that it is quite limited.
From the ” Website ” section you can create both the pages and the entries of your blog. In each of these sections there is a list of all the ones you have created. We will delve a little deeper into this topic later.
In ” Multimedia ” you will find all the photos or videos that you have been uploading, and from here you can manage.
In ” Comments ” you will have all those that are leaving in your posts, and in ” Messages ” those that your readers send you. From both sections you can answer, delete or modify them.
In the ” Jetpack ” section you will find the Activity Log and Backup.
In the activity log you can control the updates of themes and plugins, user access or changes in the configuration.
And in ” Backup “ you can create copies of safety of your blog. However, this plugin is only available for the business plan, so to have it you will have to change plans and pay a monthly fee.
The ” Design “ tab is the one that allows you to customize your website. You can modify the structure of the elements to your liking. If you click on ” Customize “ you get to this window where you can modify the design of your blog.
In ” Themes ” you will find the settings that cover everything related to the design of your website, such as the colors, the typeface of the letter or the position of the elements that you later customize later.
If you click on this option, it takes you to the gallery of themes available on WordPress.com.
In ” Tools ” you will find different sections, such as plugins.
A plugin is an external plugin that is installed in WordPress to add some functionality. There are many very famous and that contribute great things, like Yoast Seo , Elementor , or Contac form. What is a WordPress plugin and what is it for?
Plugins are perhaps the most powerful feature of WordPress. In this post I explain what a WordPress plugin is exactly.
In the ” Import “ tab you will find the tools if you want to migrate your blog from another platform, such as Squarespace or Wix , while in export you generate the data to export your blog from WordPress.com
In the ” Marketing ” section you have tools to increase visits to your blog, and in ” Income “ the benefits you get when you monetize the blog will appear.
Finally, in ” Settings ” you will find the more technical settings, such as those we make when creating the account, hosting plan, domain or people.
The last section, called ” WP Admin ” opens a new window with the WordPress administrator panel.
This administrator panel is almost identical to the one used in WordPress.org , and has practically the same functionalities as the one we have seen so far, but with a different user interface. In the images below you can see the difference between the two:
In general, I recommend that you use the WP Admin interface, because it is more intuitive and easier to use.
How to create content on a WordPress blog
As we have already said, WordPress.com makes it very easy to create the content on your blog . Through the themes you can customize your website as you like, and start creating the content you have in mind.
The difference between pages and posts in WordPress
Although they may seem the same at first, WordPress posts and pages play a very different role.
The pages are those that create the structure of your website, such as ” Home “, ” Blog “, ” About Me ” or ” Contacts “.
Instead, the entries are the publications or posts that you will be adding and where you write the content of your blog. In the settings of these, we find the labels and categories.
The labels are tools you use WordPress to classify the content of your publication . They are words or a set of words (a maximum of three is recommended) that define the content of the publication. You must add them in the side menu of the entry.
The main function of the tags is to organize the content by themes within your blog, and thus also improve the SEO of your website.
The categories are sections that classify the content of your blog whole, as “Digital Marketing” or “web development” and helps Google understand the composition of your blog.
How to add a new page on WordPress.com
To add a new page from the WP admin interface , just go to the left menu and click on “ Pages ”. Then click on ” Add new “.
To add a new page from the WordPress.com interface , the first thing you should do is go to the menu on the left and click on ” My website “.
This will open a drop-down menu where you must click on “ Pages ”.
In «Pages» you can find all the ones you have created.
As you can see in the image below, WordPress has created 4 example pages so that you can see what the list of these will look like when you have already created them.
To create a new page, click on the button on the top right where it says “ Add new page”.
As we said before, WordPress.com does not have as many customization possibilities in the design of your blog. But what it does allow us is to download a template that we like and structure our content like that.
For our example we are going to choose the template that you see in the image below. To use a template, choose it and then click on it. Then click on the ” Use blog layout ” button on the top right.
Once you have selected the template, it takes you to this page which, as you can see, is quite similar to when we created a post.
To customize the page of your WordPress.com blog, you just have to add and customize the different blocks that you want to put on it.
The advantage of having a design template is that we only have to modify some aspects to our liking.
If you need hosting for your website or your blog, act!
- Ionos by 1and1 : with an 88% discount here
- Hostinger : 83% off here

Notice: these offers are valid now , they may expire in a few days.
For example, you should change the title and the welcome message to the main page.
In this case we have also modified the background photo so that it fits the theme of our blog.
This image belongs to a background block, so to modify it you must select the block and click on the ” Replace ” button.
If you don’t have the image uploaded, click on “Open files.”
Now, select the image you want and click “Insert”.
Depending on the page of your blog, you must add certain blocks or others.
We usually do the impossible to get visits with SEO, with online ads and creating content every week. But we don’t care enough about converting them to subscribers, customers, etc. The result? Stay at 40%, 30% or less of our true potential.
How to make a new entry on WordPress.com
To add a new entry from the WP Admin interface , you must go to the menu on the left and click on ” Entries “.
From this administrator you have a section of categories and labels, where you can see all the ones you have created.
To create a new entry, in this window, click on the ” Add new ” button, on the top left.
To add a new entry from the interface WordPress.com The first step is to go to the menu on the left and click on the option ” Site Web “.
This opens a drop-down menu with the options of: ” Pages “, ” Entries “, ” Multimedia “, ” Comments” and ” Messages “. To create a new post, click on ” Posts “.
Once inside this section you will find three example entries that WordPress.com has created so that you can see how the list of posts will look when you have already created several.
To start creating a new post, click on the pink button on the top right, where it says “ Add new post ”.
This takes you to a blank page that, as you can see, you have the option of adding a title and below to write the content that you want.
To see the post settings you must click on the button at the top right of settings. This displays a right menu with two tabs ” Input” and ” Block”.
In the post settings you can modify all the settings regarding the status and visibility of the post, when you are going to publish the post, the post link, or the categories and tags.
These are very important for the seo of your blog and its positioning in Google. If you want to learn more about seo, I leave you this article in which it talks in detail about how to work it.
In the block settings you will find the configuration of each block that we will see in depth later.
How to customize the structure of your blog
Once you have the structure of your blog when you have created the pages that compose it, you just have to ” sort ” that content a bit and add some details, which we will explain below.
How to customize the design with a WordPress theme
The so-called themes, or templates , are predesigned structures that WordPress makes available to you , and that you can insert in your blog.
We have already seen how to insert one when we have added a new page, but you can tweak the theme whenever you want , without creating a new page.
To do it from the WordPress.com interface , go to the ” Design ” section and click on ” Themes “.
This opens a window where you can see the entire catalog of themes that you have available. When you want to apply one, you just have to click on the theme.
A new window opens, like the one you see in the example below. Now, click on the ” Activate this design ” button.
To apply a theme from the WP Admin interface , go to the ” Appearance ” section and select the ” Themes ” option .
Here you see the same catalog as before. When you hover over it, you can see two options that appear below the theme photo: ” Activate ” or ” Preview .
The latter allows you to see a preview of how that theme would look on your website.
If you like it and want to apply it, click ” Apply “
To customize the theme you have applied, you must go to ” Design “, and then ” Customize ” in the WordPress.com interface, or to ” Appearance “, ” Customize ” in the WP Admin interface.
In both cases, you arrive at this screen, in which, depending on the theme you have activated, you can modify its appearance , such as the color of the letter, the typography or the background color.
How to create a menu on WordPress.com
To create the menu of your blog we have two methods depending on the interface you want to use.
To do it from the WP Admin , go to the section of the left side menu, where it says ” Appearance “. Within this, click on ” Menus “.
You see a screen like the one in the example below, with two sections: ” Add items to the menu ” and ” Menu structure .”
In the first one, you can select a page that you want to add to the menu, by clicking on the box on its left, and then clicking on the button that says “Add to menu”.
By default, WordPress adds the pages that it already gives you created to the menu, which is why you already see them added in the example.
In the second section, you can modify the order of appearance of the pages in the menu of your blog. Just leave the cursor on the page, and drag it to the position you want it to take.
Important! You can also create a submenu (a page within a page), dragging that page to the right of a top one, as you see in the image below.
When you’re done, click on ” Save Menu “
Creating the menu from the WordPress.com interface is a bit more complicated , because there is no section as such, and you must create or modify it from the theme you have chosen for your blog, so I recommend the first method.
How to put a home page on WordPress.com
The main page , or landing page , is the first page your readers see when they access the blog. Therefore, it is essential that it be a beautiful page, that it takes you to spend a while browsing and that it is neat and “clean”.
Once you’ve designed it, you only have to follow a couple of steps to set it as your homepage in WordPress.
In fact, in the WordPress.com interface if you have not configured any yet, in ” My home page “, the following message will appear:
To get started, click on ” Edit Home Page “, and it takes you to a page that you can configure to your liking.
As we saw before, to customize with a WordPress theme , click on ” Change the design “, in the “Page design ” section in the menu on the right.
This takes you to the window we saw in theme customization. Select the one you like the most and click on ” Use the design ” on the top right.
Once you have chosen the design and customized the page to your liking, click publish and you will have your main page ready.
If you already have a main page and you want to change it , go to the “Pages” section of the WordPress.com interface and you will see a list of all of them.
Now click on the three dots on the right of each page and a menu will open with different options.
You must select the option ” Set as home page ” and it will automatically be set as such.
How to see the visits your blog has
One of the advantages of WordPress.com compared to WordPress.org, is that it has a statistics section without the need to install any plugin.
When your blog begins to have visits, this section will be very useful, because it has great graphics and summaries of the number of visits to your publications.
When you enter the “Statistics” section, upon entering, you will find a graph that shows annual, monthly, weekly or daily data, depending on the filter you have selected.
The two most determining variables are visits and visitors.
The former are the number of times that a user has loaded a page of your blog, while the latter shows the number of times that a single user has accessed the blog in that period.
